Cake decorating was one of those things I had wanted to try for a few years. But, I always seemed to put it off for one reason or another. Until back in 2003 when they opened a Michael's near our new house. I thought it was a sign that I should just sign up for classes- so I did. I soon was addicted and jumped right into the cake world! At the time, I was working and my co-workers were my main audience. It soon branched out to others. At one time, I was doing up to 5 or 6 cakes in one weekend. After my son was born, 2 things (well more than 2, but we'll just talk about 2) happened...1) my priorities changed and 2) I grew a little more of a backbone and learned it was OK to say no!
At one time, I was doing so many cakes that I really resented each and every one for the time it took away from my kids and family. I knew something had to change right then. After doing cakes for so many years, I have now built a really good clientele. These are people that I really enjoy doing cakes for and they really appreciate the cakes that I create. I love that there are a few kids that I have made every cake for- from their Mom's baby shower to their birthday cakes! There is nothing better than the sheer delight of a little kid seeing their cake or the precious "thank you" cards I sometimes receive! It it really just a handful of people plus a few of their friends here and there. But I find that I enjoy this much better and still have time with my family. I would say that I do somewhere between 1 and 4 cakes a month- it really just depends. But the days of doing more than one a week are few and far between. As much as I love the creative outlet, nothing is worth the stress and guilt from missing that treasured family time! The great thing for me is that I don't have to do this and can walk away at whatever point I feel the need. On the upside of that- I could have one heck of a cake supply sale and free up some space!
I think that the basic classes that I took at Michael's helped me to see that this was something I really would enjoy doing. But the vast majority of what I have learned has come from the Internet! There are many great cake decorators out there who enjoy sharing their knowledge and expertise! I have made some wonderful lifelong friends from cake message boards! There is also a lot of trial and error and learning on your own- it's a wonderful creative process. Believe me when I say that I have come a LONG way from that first class cake...it has been a long journey!
Whether you like cake decorating yourself or just enjoy looking at the finished product, I am looking forward to sharing my love for cake decorating with you!
